Theme I: Development of high catalytic electrodes for ammonia electrooxidation

Recently, removing nitrogen species (e.g. ammonia, nitrate, nitrite) from wastewater using electrochemical methods have gain much attention due to lower operation cost, no secondary pollutants produced and higher efficiency compared to traditional technologies (e.g. breakpoint chlorination, biological treatment). Ammonia electrooxidation (AEO) is a promising technology in both environmental purification field and energy production field since it oxidized ammonia at the anode while generating hydrogen gas at the cathode. Previous studies have shown that Pt-based anode are effective material to achieve high AEO performance. However, high costs of Pt-based materials inevitably limits their wide applications. Our lab focus on preparing high catalytic and stable anode electrodes using transition metals for the goal of improving AEO performance.
